The Wes Whitehurst Carbon Monarch
Oct 2, 2001 The Carbon Monarch launching! |
LOG:
September 23, 2001. The Carbon Monarch flew for the first time Sunday Sept 23, 2001
Mike Couts had the privelege of being the first to fly the glider. He was full of praise for it! Mat Flew it next and returned a little perplexed...something wasn't quite correct! YES! the CG was a little too aft! He put on the parachute to move himself forward two inches and that made all the difference! From our initial few flights we immediately noticed a much slower speed and very quick aileron response which is probably due to the very light wings. The last flight was in 10- 12 mph 70- 90 degree cross winds which handled surprisingly well but it was best thought to continue the flight testing under calmer conditions. One other small problem we had was that the yaw string was now more influenced by the surface wind than the glider's airspeed.....I guess that calls for a lighter yaw string! One other very noticeable thing is that the glider tends to be very influenced by the ground effect and floats forever!

The Rudder pedals still need a layer of carbon, I felt they are just a little weak in torsion. They are adjustable too. |
September 15,2001. Just some final details to cleanup!
![]() |
The fabric is put on the wing root fairing and fitted with nylon screws. All of this will also have tape on the edges. |
September 14, 2001. The Completed Monarch is back together..... just small details to attend to. The BRS is loaded and everything has been weighed.... YES! 156 pounds with the BRS.... the BRS is about 24 lbs!!! Yes it is a large one, the BRS 900! OK now to clean everything up....and go fly!~
![]() |

This is the hard slow way to apply the sealer,,, but the best way! |
August 30, 2001. Well I did go flying yesterday Spend 2 and 1/2 hours in the Grob 102 then about 5 flights in the Monarch G... but the wings are covered!
![]() |
Now here is one very difficult thing to do....gas mask for the fumes, ear phones for the noice of the exhaust fan, glasses so I do not get any in my eye and gloves to protect my piano playing fingers!!! then I'm expected to paint on the dope.... and its not that easy! |
