LOG:

March 27, 2001. We have wingtips!

Jeff holding the new wingtip!...
And the last Rib #2 plug is fitted: ready for making the mold!

Mar 23, 2001. slow progress... went flying yesterday and got a hour and a half practice in the grob 102 at less than 3000 ft agl; Ordering nuts and bolts in stainless, various other supplies... cat food etc for the post curing help!

Still looking like wings!
The other Wes checking out the trailing edge on the elevator!

Mar 21, 2001. Working on the stainless parts... they bend just fine... drill with pressure !Onward!

One Rudder! in the mold
Working on the metal parts
And the fuselage ready for the metal parts

March 20, 2001. The wing strut fittings are ready except for the bolts.

We have ordinary aircraft bolts for the purpose of alignment. Stainless are on their way!
Slave labor on the wingtips: Greg MacPhperson form New Zealand
Hey that guy actually does some work!... now Jeff he's resting after making good progress on the wingtips!

March 16, 2001. Finally the Stainless parts arrive!

March 14, 2001. More little pieces in the puzzle... underside stiffners on the rear spar... top side trailing edge brace.

A trailing edge brace.... carbon ofcourse!
Yes the rear stiffners!finally done on the left wing!

March 13, 2001. The top surface rear stiffners are epoxied in.

lots of tape and clamps!

Mar 09, 2001. Progess will seem a little slower now as we fit all of the little items. We have found quite a weight saving in eliminating the drag wires and drag compression strut and replacing it with one carbon tube. Jim came up with a brilliant idea to eliminate the ribs in the Ailerons.... use a corrugation on the inside of the aileron. We feel that by putting carbon on the elevators we will increase the weight by 4 pounds over the fabric. More study will be done.

A full view of the wings in progress

Mar 08, 01. The trailing edge of the main wing is now fully attached, all the aileron and elevator hinge blocks epoxied on and a process to make the carbon tubes for the aileron pushrods started!Your CG diagrams have been mailed to you by express dogsled/ trained seagull.... and new delivery servicein the area!

Jeff adjusting the clamps on the aileron hinge block.
the trailing edges installed with gussets
A closeup of the clamped hinge blocks.... hard to take a good picture of black on black.

Mar 06, 2001. The ribs are epoxied in, the trailing edges epoxied and the wingtip molds are almost ready to go!And the weight of a wing is roughly 19 lbs so far with the ribs installed!

Trailing edges epoxied on!
Jeff Preparing the wingtips! EXCITING!!

Mar. 02, 2001! Wow does time passs quickly... OK back to work after goofing off. Now let me see... yes the shop actually did some work while I was away... finished off those rib molds and produced ribs from them. (see below) In order to make it look like there was gigantic progress I fitted them in the wing and snapped a picture... and yes there is one rib missing in the root section of the right wing... soon to be molded.

The ribs produced while I was away.....upsetting to think the shop can operate without me!~
And my handywork.. placing the ribs ready for the epoxy... note the spoiler boxes placed in rib #7.

Feb 16, 2001.A few more ribs installed.. .even tried out the spoiler box!

Yes that spoiler pan fits... but I can't install it until I make the spoiler plate... yes it will be Carbon!!... All those ribs are epoxied in!

Feb 15, 2001. All of the rib molds are done, just a lot of cleanup on them to do. We have cast 6 more ribs which I should install tomorrow. I have the stainless steel plans ready to send to the laser shop.

All those ribs and rear spars are now epoxied!.. looking like wings\!
Same wings.. from the root!

Feb 13, 2001. More progress o nthe final ribs and the rear spar epoxied in on the left wing.

Rib #9 epoxied in on the right wing!
The left wing (closest) has the rear spar epoxied in.. waiting for more ribs!

Feb 12, 2001. The Camera has arrived back....

The first few ribs are epoxied in!...and everything else is pretty well ready to go! Lots of visitors lately....to really touch and see a carbon wing! Jim took one of the wing ribs to Indianapolis... really shocked quite a number of people with the low weight and high strength. The Wes Whitehurst glider is making quite a name for itself!
Jewff Longstaff on the last two molds... thats if I counted correctly....OH but there is till the rib #2.... we will make the mold to fit once the wing is glued up.

Feb 11, 2001. We have ordered the Carbon Rods for the controls, the wing is partially assembled and we are down to the last two molds to be made for the ribs!... and Mike has my Camera... so no pictures yet!

Feb 5, 2001. We have the final elevator spar and ailerone spar done!... and a few more dtube tail ribs to go! We have found a source of carbon rod for the the aileron pushrods and the fuselage controls. That will be quite a weight savings over the aluminum!.

Under the watchful eye of our supervisor, work goes on...... he has a very good way of keeping us at our work...... yes the claws dig in!! And he watches our every movement.....just wait until you get their invoice.... 7000 lbs of cat food!! (shrimp flavor please)
Adn the last elevator and elevator spar!.... carbon really looks good!..... Jim is very surprised as to the weight!..... less than half of the fiberglass.

Feb 2, 2001 Well still more tail ribs! But the end is coming.... we have only a few more plugs to sand out then make the last of the molds!

The Dtube jigs have been leveled and permanently bolted to the floor.... a distraction from the plug making.... just seven more plugs to sand !

(I haven't told the crew yet that there are elevator molds to make.... well... and a few rudder ones..... hmmmm wonder if they will fall for the gals on the beaches again???)

Well Jeff Longstaff is on to waxing some of the sanded plugs....progress!!!

Jan 31, 2001. Rather a good day yesterday with a lot of work accomplished!WE did the last ailerons spar the last elevator and did a coat of epoxy on the last of the dtube tail ribs.

Jeff Longstaff putting the final touches on the elevator spar.

Jan 30, 2001 The metal parts are ready to be laser cut... so I will source out the stainless.

The last of the Tailribs with Jeff Longstaff. (His leg chains do not show in the photo... they come off when he's finished!)

Jan 24, 2001. We have all the plugs done for the tailrib molds so we did a complete mockup of the wings!

Everything fits....Jim says we should probably do away with the packing tape holding it together when we fly it.

Jan 23, 2001. Bit of muntiny here......seems like the crew is getting fed up with the mold making...... so we play a dart game with a picture of WES!! (That should keep them until we finish the job!!)... any chance of sending us another check.... I need to purchase the metal and then laser cut it.

Another mock up to make sure they fit with a few of the plugs (foam cutouts ) before we make the molds. Say thats starting to look like a wing!!!

Jan 22, 2001. All the metal parts drawings are collected together in their respective sizes and ready for cutting....looking for a source of stainless. And of course more of the tail ribs!!!!

Yes lots of them... and more to go!
Jeff Cleaning up the molds.....

Jan 20, 2001. Progress will now seem a little slower since we are just putting together all the metal drawings to send them out to be lazer cut. ... ofcourse there is still the rib molds..... All of the major components are now fabricated.

there it is the right Dtube done!.... yikes only 13 lbs 2 oz!!!! over a pound lighter than the left......
More of those tail ribs made up@!

Jan 18, 2001. More progress! More dtube molds and an initial wing mockup!

More of those many dtube tail ribs being vacuum bagged!
Hey now doesn't that look good!@!!!

Jan 17, 2001. Working on the metal layout on the computer with the shop finishing the various small carbon parts.

Jim and Jeff Longstaff working on an aileron.

Jan 16, 2001. Our large layups are done and now on to the the ailerons and elevators!

Note the fuselage in the background....waiting for the metal! The aileron and elevator spars ready to go!
