We expect to test and publish performance figures for this glider during the summer of 2002.

We feel that The Pioneer IId designed in the 1970's was grossly misrepresented in an article in Soaring Magazine which erroneously tested a poorly built example with a completely inappropriate substitute airfoil, but was represented as a true Marske Pioneer.

. Jim Marske deserves a lot more recognition for an extremely advanced well performing, well designed sailplane than he received in this Soaring Society article.

Our story follows:

April 29, 2002. We have one wingtip added, spoiler pans in adn the arifoil pretty much finished!

Yes we have a wingtip!
Mat on the airfoil sanding.. long, long, hours!!!
Mike varnishing the wood ready for the skin, note the spoiler pan just installed.

Apr 24, 2002. Jim has started the wingtip extensions, the spoiler pans are in but what remains is a real headache is to find a simple return springs mechanism.

The mold with a layer of cloth ready for wetting out.

Apr 18, 2002. Yes the flying weather has arrived and that has inspired us to get moving... lots of sanding and filling..... and spoiler pans!

Mike spent a lot of time experimenting and fitting these..... well done!

Apr 09, 2002. The arrival of the warm weather brings out an extra push in getting the job complete... we are still of course going to be done "tuesday".

Mike got busy figuring out the new spoiler pans to help increase our descent rate.Pictured is a sample of the span (fiberglass in the center)
Mike fitting the spoilers over the new proposed spoiler pan.
Yes and another coat of filler on the left wing.

Mar 31, 2002. some more good progress being made... yes more sanding and finally a decision to scrap the ailersons and build new ones.

We ripped the fabric off to discover a badly made ailerons.... so we junked them.
Mike sanding filler again!
Nearing completion on the right wing.

Mar 28, 2002. A good session with filling the right wing top surface.

Mar 24, 2002. Good progress on the Pioneer. We cut off the excess plywood behind the spar and put the first layer of filler on the left wing and put a final coat of filler on the right wing.... it helps to have the flying weather just around the corner for inspiration.

The left wing with the rough first layer of filler.
Mike sanding filler again!

Mar 21, 2002. More wing filling and sanding

Just a little more progress!

Mar 14, 2002. More progress! Mike Routered away the excess wing sking behind the spar adn a little more filling of the wing!

Mike hard at work!

Mar 3, 2002. The airfoil template guides have allowed us to fill the wings.

A new coat of filler just applied!
A look from the root.. much improved and lots to go.

Feb 12, 2002. We have both trailing edges on the wing now!

Feb 2, 2002. More progress with the wingtips!

Sanding the mold!
