The Pioneer IId designed in the 1970's was grossly misrepresented in an article in Soaring Magazine of July 1974 which erroneously tested a poorly built example with a completely inappropriate substitute airfoil, but was represented as a true Marske Pioneer.

. Jim Marske deserves a lot more recognition for an extremely advanced well performing, well designed sailplane than he received in this Soaring Society article.

This project is to rebuild the Pioneer IId to its intended original state and update any areas we find lacking.

windows media (xp) video clip of the launching of the Pioneer IId november 2002.

On our computer using explorer we do not get good results for the videos. when using netscape we get very good results... but they do take a long time to download.

Our story follows:

June 1, 2004. The Pioneer IId is at the airport and ready for flight! Mat and Mike spent two days checking everything over.... and now all we need is the weather!

There she is in the hangar.. now all we need is good weather.
The moving weight in action!

May 28, 2004. Well Tim Tanquay came over and did our inspection....so it can now fly legally!!! Lots of late night work on the moving weight system. I think Mat over engineered it! It has been long days in the shop getting this bird ready for flying. A lot of details to attend to.

Now tim is sorry he asked what was under that suspicious cover....but it does seem to work!
Well there is the main guts to the system. There is a cover that goes over everything and the little red had you see is the forward/aft CG indicator. It is missing the cover and knob in this photo.

May 25,2004. We have really put in a lot of effort in the last week or so....even thought the rain continues day and night!

Now doesn't that look good!... instruments in.... just a few things left to go!
Well there are the wheel fairings.. yes big and ugly but probably good for a rough field!
Canopy is glued and ready for paint
The newly invented canopy clips to hold the canopy on while we glue it on... we used sikaflex to glue it on.

May 15, 2004... We are making good progress...the hull has its final coat of smooth prime and we are ready for painting this week..... flying?.... next weekend.

The newly painted latches and instrument panel.... OK ready for that canopy!
Trial fit of the new canopy. We are a little concerned as to the brittleness of the canopy.

May 3, 2004. Mike came over and we put the wings on and placed a few instruments in. As Mike said everything is out of square.... which suits everything else on the glider.

The instrument panel... seems to fit! The release is moved to the left, the radio on the right and altitude moved to the bottom....and everything offset by 4.23 degrees to suit the the tilted tail factor inherent in the building of this particular glider.
Yup that hinged canopy does work!
The wings on and Mike making glider noises.
Mike cleaning the new canopy..... we certainly make the best optics!!!
The instrument panel is taped in to try things out.

April 27, 2004. A sprurt of activity here as the weather warms up for the soaring season.

The gas strut is attached... and it works just fine!
One front wheel fairing mold!
The Wheel fairings ready for the mold making.

April 21, 2004. Mike came by and cast the lead weight... had trouble getting an iron pot so we bought a new one. The front hinging canopy is coming together and the lead weight moves like its in melted butter. This is sure taking a lot longer than any of us planned!

Now for a nose wheel and still working on the plug for the main wheel..... I hope we do not regret the large wheel which is more for comfort than aerodynamic efficiency!.. and yes I found a 6 " pneumatic for the nose!... another big bump on the fuselage!
More foam
OK thats a good start.... but it is too big??

April 13, 2004. OK onward... Mat thought that the glider needed a bigger wheel for our porposed cross country adventures this summer.... well that involved putting a large tire into a small space... we had the moving weight tube on one side and the control linkage on the other... absolutley no room!!!.... so he cut down the brack drum.... and squeezed everythign in.... barely!

Well it just fits!... now for a super duty wheel cover!
Thats the tire and brake drum!
And thats where the wheel belongs!

April 7, 2004. So here we where, Mat and Mike left in the shop late at night with a couple of sheets of plexiglass and the "hot" box.....

Now this is where it gets tricky.... note the shop vac hose for vacuum and Mike is carefully gauging the amount of vacuum to get to the prescribed outline. Meanwhile Mat is calling out the temperatures. Things seemed to stabilize at about 230 degrees F and we could take off the vacuum..... and yes Mike hostage we have a canopy for you too!
OK the top is on and the electric heaters turned on.... Mat looking for the magic temperature of 330 degrees F... Note the hose on the floor just in case the wood caught fire!
OK we have the plexiglass in the box... how does it look Mike?

April 2, 2004. We have a canopy frame.

Hey a canopy rail!.. now for the canopy?
We used wax to make the canopy mold.
