1. Cg range maintained, without a change in nose or tail ballast, with pilot and chute weight
excursion of 80 lbs.
2. Aft cg limit: Official limit to be 1% chord or 10mm forward of aft cg limit established through flight tests.
3. Maximum Weight = Empty weight +220 lbs + chute + equipment + removable ballast.
4. Empty Weight = Empty weight + fixed ballast + minimum instruments.
5. Dive Brakes to limit speed in 45 degree dive. Minimum of 30 degree for acceptance.
6. Spoiler Open glide to less than 10 to 1 @ 1.3 Vs at maximum weight.
7. Maximum pilot control Limit force effort against stops:
Pitch = 80 lbs, Roll = 40 lbs, Yaw = 175 lbs, Spoiler = 80 lbs
8. Minimum Roll Rate @ 1.3 Vs through 90 degrees = [span (m) / 3 ]
9. Cross wind Velocity max = 15 mph
10. Trimable Speed = Between 1.2 Vs and 2.0 Vs.
11. Prove Adequate Stability in: Pitch, Spiral and Yaw.
12. Gust Loads: +/- 15mps @ Vb and 7.5mps @ Vd.
13. Air Tow and Winch Tow Max Velocity = not less than 2 x Vs.
14. Control System Strength. Limit load applied at stick and resisted on control surface at horn:
Elevator = 45 lbs, Aileron = 23 lbs, Each Rudder Pedal = 120 lbs, Spoiler = 45 lbs,
Tow release = 45 lbs, Both Rudder Pedals = 130 lbs.
14a. Dual Place: Each pilot applies 0.75 times the load specified in Item 14.
15. Control System Stretch cannot exceed 25% at full load.

1. Clarification needed on maximum speed in glider category.
Answer given was Vne to be considered 115 kts.
2. Retractable landing gear not permitted for reasons of simplicity and low cost.
Gliders have one main landing wheel. This exposed wheel represents a major air drag item. At cruise speed, in straight normal flight, the wheel drag approaches 25% of the total aircraft air drag. This means that the gliding distance to a safe landing field is decreased by 25%. Gliders are so streamlined that any exposed protrusion represents a major drag item. Glider drag with retracted wheel: 500/30=16.7#. Glider with wheel extended: Wheel = 5.3#. 500/16.7+5.3=22.7. A reduction of glide distance of 22.7/30= 25%.
3. Towing: An LSA cannot tow anything. ?? Many glider clubs use club owned light airplanes to tow the clubs light gliders. The towplane pilot receives no compensation. This has provided afforable flying for club members. Our Club has operated this way for over 40 years and currently has 170 members.
4. Turbine powered self launch gliders: Currently under development is a simple turbine type engine to be used for self-launching gliders. The size of a 2 lb coffee can and weighing 16 lbs it can produce enough power to launch an 800 lb glider. Only 3 moving parts 150 - 200 lbs thrust. Without a propeller much retraction complexity is eliminated. The high thrust line associated with a large propeller produces a strong nosedown pitch when power is applied. Air drag of a stationary or windmilling propeller is extremely high compared to the small exposed turbine engine. If the engine does not restart immediately the pilot is in deep trouble due to the high drag propeller.
5. Fireproof Data Plate: Engineless gliders do not constitute a fire hazzard.
6. 10,000 ft Limited Ceiling:
Glider pilots in mountain states currently fly above18,000 ft in the FAA specified window. LSA aircraft should be allowed to fly unrestricted below 18,000 ft and in the FAA restricted windows if the pilot carries a standard private pilots license but may be limited to under 10,000 ft agl by the sport pilot license.
