Lloyd Watsons first flight in the Monarch. This uses a 200 ft rope which does not store much energy so the takeoff roll is long while the truck gets up to speed. Notice the glider flies when it is ready and there is no input needed from the pilot.
A landing in the Monarch. Landing pattern airspeed is 40 mph to account for wind gradient but you must be below 30 mph on touchdown or you will still be at flying speed and as soon as you hit the slightest bump you will be back in the air in a stalled position!
Head on takeoff from a 1000 ft rope. The truck actually starts its accelleration about 8 seconds before the glider moves.The rope is really a rubber band.
