The model is flying! March 2005:

Hi Mat
Well here she is ! Hope you enjoy the pics. I had to play around with the CG, I was hoping to trim the elevators in line with the root fairing, but this meant CG at 22% MAC ,Result- not pleasant to fly- very pitch sensitive- porpoising flight and when opening the brakes it pitches violently down. So I,ve settled for CG mid way between 17.5 and 22.5 MAC with 6mm up elevator trim. In this trim she handles perfect, No pitching with brakes. She is fast and smooth, the Ailerons are powerful- 360 roll looked good, Loops can be very BIG, she has so much energy after a 45 deg dive , There is no adverse yaw with aileron only banks- 2-1 diff . The rudder is plenty powerful but I have not fully explored it yet. Look forward to flying her in more thermal weather , at present She was seriously out climbed by a heavier HP 18 also 1/4 scale !! -that can't be right Mat !. Anyway as you can see she looks the part and has sure given me a buzz.

Regards Chris

Note from Mat:

Well done Chris!

I do wonder about the MAC.... could it be the percent chord of wing? We fly the Pioneer IId at about 24-27% MAC. Also when we fly the Pioneer IId we always have the elevator inline except at high speed... but we have a moving weight! How about a movintg weight? -mat

Mat Re C/G ,you can see the 25% MAC and the V mark in front, this is max rear pos for hands off flying, any further back it will be too pitch sensitive ,any further forward is very stable but needs a lot of up elevator trim. The brakes are very powerfull - I did not need to make them over scale size. This wing makes alot of noise, sounds like a turbine , it can be heard 1/2 mile away, Im wondering if its the rudder cables just below the root fairings ,Anyway the P 111 has certainly turned heads- the Lads love the noise!

The Pioneer III getting underway!

Hi Mat here are some pics of the P111 wings, now ready for covering, as you see all builtup with 1/64 ply skin, 58 oz inc servos. The section made building difficult with such a thin TE, but I,m very pleased with them and think the all up weight will be under 8lbs - good for 1/4 scale. I plan to make the CG adustable in flight not sure how yet! .

All for now , Regards to all . Chris
